A Definition of Procrastination

Procrastination is “knowing” that you should do something but you are just not doing it. It is “knowing” that taking action on some task will give you a desired result, but still you just don’t do it. Procrastination ranges from task aversion to complete task evasion even if you know intellectually that you desire an opposite result. Putting off important tasks in favour of unimportant and mundane activities is something that is becoming more prominent in our current lifestyles. The amount of distractions and immediate “feel good” activities makes it even harder to stay focussed on what you want most from life; that which will eventually make you feel happy and fulfilled.

The word procrastination comes from the Latin word procrastinatus. pro - (forward) and crastinus (of tomorrow) - or ‘in favour of tomorrow’. I am sure that as you start reflecting on some of the things you really want to do (but haven’t done yet) you can start to appreciate where you would have been if only you started doing it a month, a week or even a year ago. One of the key ideas that I focus on is this: It is not whether you can do something, but whether you will. See, it’s not your capability that determines what you create with (and in) your life, but your actions. We all have the ability to achieve virtually anything we can dream of. Napoleon Hill said it beautifully - “whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve.”

The difference in people then comes in with actually doing it and developing this mindset that empowers you to take virtually any idea and make it real by simply acting on the impulse, the desire, the idea and the dream. And then…to consistently act on this and to confidently progress in the direction of the dream.

Small consistent and incremental steps is how you achieve great results. The challenge is that we tend to postpone these small and simple actions ‘in favour of tomorrow’ and this mindset is one of the biggest reasons why most people fail to participate in the abundance of life.

Now’s The Time

“Now is the only time there is. Make your now wow, your minutes miracles, and your days pay. Your life will have been magnificently lived and invested, and when you die you will have made a difference.” - MARK VICTOR HANSEN
